Assistant Head to Deputy Head Support Programme

Dates to be confirmed, but course runs in final term.

Session 1:

Introduce fellowship members to the programme framework with guidelines and targets to be achieved.

Develop networking opportunities and prepare the applicants for the remainder of the fellowship.

Session 2, 3 &4:

Provide a forum to network and share experiences, reflections, concerns and celebrations.  Engage in developmental seminars with Headteachers and leaders from across the Chimney House Alliance.  Provide an opportunity for structured reflection.

Internship and Project in host school - 3 dates

Engage in an immersion experience of senior leadership in a school other than own. Learn about structures and ways of working and reflectively comparing them with home school.  One day shadowing the Headteacher or Deputy Head.  Undertake a research or development project with a whole school focus in the host school which involves analysis and decision making.

Session 5:

Mock Interview for Deputy Headship (Half Day)

Experience an interview conducted by a panel of Headteachers and benefit from a full structured debrief by the panel.


A Fellowship Programme for experienced Assistant Heads who aspire to Deputy Headship.  Aimed at Assistant Heads with at least one year’s experience in the role.

The purpose of the programme is to raise awareness of the similarities and differences between the roles of Assistant and Deputy Heads and prepare participants to successfully apply for Deputy Headship and make the transition between the two roles.
